A Message to Parents and Guardians from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit

November 19, 2009

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is encouraging parents to have their children vaccinated against the H1N1 flu virus, which is still circulating in our community. It is especially important to have children vaccinated because they are twice as likely as adults to spread the flu to others.

Friday, November 20, is a Professional Activity Day for all school boards and the Health Unit is holding an H1N1 Flu Clinic at Victoriaville Centre from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Please consider this opportunity to protect your child(ren) by having them vaccinated. Parents can print and sign a consent form prior to the clinic date/time if someone else plans to accompany the child(ren) on the day they are vaccinated. Consent forms and information on H1N1 clinics can be found at www.thunderbayflu.ca

For more information or for any questions you have about the flu, please call 807-625-8318.

Confirmed Presence of the H1N1 Flu Virus in Thunder Bay and District

July 02, 2009

Testing has confirmed the presence of the H1N1 flu virus in Thunder Bay and District. Scientific monitoring suggests this new virus could continue to spread throughout the summer months.

With summer camp season beginning, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has released guidelines for camps to prevent and manage the spread of the H1N1 flu virus. For the purposes of this document, a summer camp is defined as either a day camp, overnight camp, or special needs camp. Definitions of each can be found in the guideline document.

The Health Unit is providing a copy of the guideline document for your reference. The guideline document and posters supporting flu prevention can also be downloaded from the Health Unit website.

Please direct any questions to the Infectious Disease Program at 625-8318 or 1-888-294-6630, ext. 8318. Public Health Nurses are available to answer any questions regarding the guideline document, infection control practices or general questions about the H1N1 flu virus.
